Baker students plan fund-raiser for homeless
Baker University students will sleep outdoors in cardboard boxes Friday to raise money for the homeless.
Members of the Baker Ambassadors will sleep outside at Baldwin City Market, 112 Eighth St.; Antiques on the Prairie, 520 High St.; Kwik Shop, 600 Ames; and City Hall, 803 Eighth St.
The students from the community service group are soliciting donations, which will go to the First United Methodist Church emergency relief fund. Donations can be made at the sites or by calling the Baker University minister’s office at 594-4553.

National Guardsmen to speak on Veterans Day
Two Kansas National Guard officers will be guest speakers during a Veterans Day ceremony Thursday.
Col. James Stewart and Maj. Dane Childs will speak at the ceremony, set to start at 11:11 a.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 138 Ala. The ceremony will be conducted jointly by the VFW, Lawrence American Legion Post No. 14 and the Disabled American Veterans.
Stewart is director of facilities and engineering for the Guard in Topeka. He has more than 20 years of service.
Childs serves in the Directorate of Logistics, Joint Forces Headquarters, Kansas-Land Component.
In December 2002, Childs took command of the 102nd Military History Detachment and was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and attached to the 3rd Infantry Division during the invasion of Iraq.
The American Legion will be giving out free “Welcome Home” bumper stickers. The stickers are intended to welcome back veterans from their deployments.

Volunteers needed for Thanksgiving dinner
Volunteers to help prepare food, serve and clean up are needed for the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen’s annual Thanksgiving dinner.
The meal will be served from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 25 at the First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. People who want to volunteer can call Terry Connolly at 865-3985 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Organizers also are accepting financial contributions to help cover the cost of the turkeys that will be served. Donations can be sent to Marie Wilson, LINK treasurer, at P.O. Box 442472, Lawrence 66044.
The group also is taking names of people who would like to have a Thanksgiving meal delivered to them at home because they are unable to travel to the LINK dining hall. Senior citizens seeking delivery of a Thanksgiving meal should call the Douglas County Senior Services’ Community Service Office at 842-0543. People with disabilities should contact Independence Inc. at 841-0333.

Nazi-era survivor visits ‘River City Weekly’
Andrew Debicki, distinguished professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Kansas University, shares his life story starting tonight on “River City Weekly.”
Debicki, son of a Polish diplomat, grew up in the shadow of war in 1930s Europe and fled with his family from the Nazis, eventually coming to America and turning his love for poetry into a lifelong career.
Still teaching at KU, Debicki talks about his current battle with cancer.
“River City Weekly,” with host Greg Hurd, premieres Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., with encore presentations at 9:30 p.m., Thursdays at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Fridays at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday at 9 a.m., Mondays at 9:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
