Eudora council delays decision on fire chief
Eudora -- After a 30-minute executive session at its Monday night meeting, the Eudora City Council announced it had made no decision in the case of the city's fire chief, who has been suspended without pay.
Spencer McCabe was arrested in late August for criminal destruction of property when he damaged a bathroom at the Olathe Holiday Inn. He pleaded guilty last week in Johnson County District Court and was sentenced to one year probation. If he violates probation, he could be jailed for up to six months.
"On the employment issue of our fire chief, we're going to continue the process," Eudora Mayor Ron Conner said. "For the media and the crowd, we're not going to discuss what that is."
After a Eudora resident asked for clarification, the mayor said, "Be patient. We can't tonight -- due process is involved."
He ended discussion of the item with no timetable on the matter, saying it was a personnel process that would remain private.
Since McCabe's suspension, Mike Underwood has been serving as interim fire chief.
