Charges pending after police chase

A 38-year-old Lawrence man is expected to appear today in Douglas County District Court after his arrest following a police chase that ended in an accident and injuries Saturday night.

Joseph Beaman was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer and two counts of battery on an officer.

Late Saturday night a Kansas University Public Safety Officer attempted to stop an Oldsmobile Delta 88 after it was seen speeding at 10th and Ohio streets. The car didn’t stop and ended up crashing into a car and a pickup truck at Ninth and Massachusetts streets, according to witnesses.

Beaman was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released and then booked into jail, KU Police Capt. Schuyler Bailey said.

A man and a woman in the pickup truck also were taken to the hospital but there was no word Sunday about their injuries. Police Saturday night said injuries were thought to be minor.

Lawrence Police are handling the accident investigation but no information was available Sunday.
