To the editor:
I would like to add a comment to the article on downtown building fires (Nov. 1):
My late husband, Don Fortel, was the chef at Wheatfields when it nearly burned down in April of 2000.
The fire chief found the cause of the fire all right, and pointed it out to Don. And this is why I am writing, because this ONGOING RISK FACTOR was completely ignored in the article:
Old timber construction notwithstanding, that fire, which caused millions of dollars in damage, put many people out of work, cost two and a half months of business for one of the busiest places in town, and nearly took out an entire city block of businesses, was caused by one thing, and one thing only. Can anyone guess? It was caused by ONE CIGARETTE BUTT, one carelessly discarded cigarette butt.
ONE cigarette butt, people!
'Nuff said.

Perry
