Williams, Buhler honored

Free State High soccer coach Jason Pendleton thought senior Aaron Williams was the best goalkeeper in the Sunflower League.

The rest of the league’s coaches agreed. Williams was named first-team all-league Monday along with FSHS senior defender Sam Buhler.

“Sam and Aaron were well deserving of that honor,” Pendleton said. “The strength of our team was our central defense in the back. They were crucial.”

Free State senior forward Dustin Nye and junior midfielder Aaron Ideus received second-team honors.

Pendleton was named league coach of the year. Free State posted an 11-6-1 record, marking the second-highest win total in the school’s eight-year history. The Firebirds also advanced to the Class 6A regional final after a 6-9-2 season in 2003.

“I think our team got the most out of our ability,” Pendleton said. “We overachieved a little bit in relation to our talent level.”

Lawrence High forward Daniel Miranda and defender Pharouk Hussein were named to the second team.
