County officials Monday reminded first-time voters to be sure to bring a form of identification to polls today.
"It can either be a photo ID or something that shows their current address," said Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes.
Members of the advance vote board sort through mail-in advance ballots Monday at the Douglas County Courthouse. From left are Patricia Doemland, June Wilson and Norma Leary, all of Lawrence. Polls open at 7 a.m. today.
First-time voters who showed identification when they registered will not be asked to show it again. Only those who have not shown identification during the registration process will be asked for it.
Accepted forms of identification include utility bills, bank statements, paycheck stubs, passports, a current driver's license and military or student IDs.
Those using bills, bank statements and driver's licenses should check to be sure the address listed matches the address on the registration rolls.
Kansas University students may use their KU-issued ID cards.
Also, county officials have reminded poll workers that state law prohibits campaign signs within 250 feet of a polling site. Violators can receive a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.
Douglas County commissioners discussed the campaign signs and literature after Lawrence resident Alan Cowles brought up the matter at Monday's commission meeting.
Cowles said he found campaign literature at Langston Hughes School, which is a polling place, during the primary. He also mentioned a nameplate for Jere McElhaney, who's up for re-election, that inadvertently had been left up in the commission chamber in the Douglas County Courthouse while advance voting was taking place.
Commission Chairman Charles Jones said the sign was taken down.
