Ambulance involved in turnpike wreck
An ambulance overturned early Sunday on Interstate 70 near Lecompton after being broadsided by another driver, according to a police report.
A passenger in the ambulance, 22-year-old Lindsay Manning, of Tecumseh, was taken by another ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment. A dispatcher didn't know whether Manning already was being transported as a patient at the time of the wreck.
Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, but a condition report wasn't available Monday.
The wreck happened about 1:35 a.m. near mile marker 198 when the driver of a 1992 Nissan, identified as 16-year-old Kayland Lovejoy of Topeka, left the westbound lanes, overcorrected and struck the westbound AMR ambulance.
The ambulance was driven by 38-year-old Scott Hunt of Auburn. Neither driver was injured.
Fire marshal discusses smoking ban's effect
Downtown may be particularly vulnerable to fire, the city's fire marshal said in an online chat Monday, but the city's new smoking ban isn't necessarily making things safer.
"Certainly anytime we can limit ignition sources we are better off," Maj. Rich Barr said in response to a question at LJWorld.com. "And in fact, many fires are caused by smoking materials. However the majority of those fires occur where people live, i.e. houses and apartments."
Barr added: "The impact of smoking ban in lessening the fire hazard of downtown is questionable."
