City trio headed to state golf meet

Spencer, Brumley, Moseley in Class 6A field at Topeka Country Club

Approximately 100 golfers from across the state will flock to Topeka Country Club today to take part in the 18-hole Class 6A state championships.

The first groups will tee off at 9 this morning.

Three golfers will represent the city of Lawrence at today’s championships — Lawrence High seniors Nathaniel Spencer and Daniel Brumley and Free State junior Scott Moseley.

All three qualified individually at last week’s regional meet in Olathe. Spencer placed third with a 1-over 72 at Heritage Golf Course, while Brumley tied for ninth by shooting a 77.

Moseley fired an 84 to make the cut.

“Top twenty (at state) gets you a medal,” FSHS coach Jack Schreiner said, “so that’s what Scott’s shooting for.”

The three city golfers have a bit of familiarity with Topeka CC. All of them had a practice round together there Friday, and Free State and LHS participated in the Topeka West Invitational there April 26.

Spencer won that tournament and was the lone golfer to shoot under par in the 25-team field, with a 1-under 70.

Baseball slate set: Free State’s baseball team, which advanced to the state tournament Wednesday after beating Lawrence, 7-4, learned this weekend that it would play Blue Valley West on Friday to open state.

The first-round game will start at 11 a.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.

Blue Valley West is 18-4 and in its second straight state tournament. It lost to Hutchinson, 7-0, in the opening round a year ago.

Free State, with a record of 18-3, is the No. 3 seed in the eight-team tournament. The other participants are Goddard (20-2), Wichita Northwest (19-3), Manhattan (17-3), Olathe North (18-4), Maize (17-5) and Blue Valley Northwest (8-14).

The FSHS-Blue Valley West winner will play Saturday at 10 a.m. against the Wichita Northwest-Maize winner. Friday’s losers are eliminated.

Other area schedules: Two area baseball teams and one area softball team also will be competing in state tournaments.

The Ottawa High softball team, led by phenomenal sophomore pitcher Megan Ramsey, will play Wichita Carroll Friday at 5 p.m. in Winfield. Carroll is 21-1; Ottawa is 16-6.

The Cyclones baseball team also is in Winfield for state. It also will play Wichita Carroll, at 6:30 p.m. Friday. At 15-5, Ottawa is the six-seed. Carroll (17-5) is the No. 3 seed.

Santa Fe Trail is the third area qualifier for state. The Chargers (20-3) earned a two-seed in the 4A tournament and will play Larned (17-6) at 11 a.m. Friday in Salina.

LHS state record falls: Among the many state records Wichita Trinity captured this weekend at the Kansas state swimming and diving championships was one of local interest.

Lawrence High’s 200 free relay team of 1991 blazed to a record time of 1:40.43 in winning state that year. The record held for 13 years, but finally fell Saturday to Trinity, which won the race in 1:39.45.

Free State girls swimming coach Jama Crady was on that ’91 relay team. Before Saturday, that record was the oldest state record still standing.

“I was really hoping that my team would break it, but it wasn’t meant to be,” Crady said. “They’ll get it next year. It’s something to shoot for.”
