Train derails in Argonia, forcing evacuations

Argonia — A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train jumped the tracks Sunday in Argonia, forcing the evacuation of some neighborhoods because of a chemical leak.

No injuries were reported.

Steve Forsberg, a railroad spokesman, said seven cars in a train headed from Chicago to Los Angeles derailed at 1:50 p.m. on tracks just south of Argonia, about 40 miles southwest of Wichita.

Forsberg said two of the 35 cars in the train contained hazardous materials. He said the cause of the derailment was unknown.
