Great Bend to spend $100,000 to repair vandalized gravestones

? City officials believe it will cost about $100,000 to fix about 100 gravestones that were vandalized early Tuesday in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

Great Bend Parks Department employees, from left, Scott Keeler, Scott Ehrlich and Dan Pruett work to set a headstone upright in the Great Bend Cemetery. Nearly 100 gravestones were either damaged or destroyed Tuesday by vandals. Crews hope to repair the stones by Memorial Day.

Some of the older stones at the Great Bend Cemetery were more than a century old and may not be repairable, officials said.

Great Bend Police Capt. Bob Robinson said a group of vandals tipped over a variety of stones, breaking most loose from their concrete bases.

The vandals left several pieces of evidence in the cemetery, Robinson said.

City parks crews will begin to fix the damaged stones in time for Memorial Day.

Tim Wornkey, the city’s assistant director of public lands, said the cemetery is public land and taxpayers will have to pick up the costs to fix the stones.
