Boating-safety course scheduled this weekend

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will teach a boating-safety class Saturday at Clinton Lake Marina.

The Kansas Boaters Safety Course, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is free and open to the public. Students who pass an exam given during the course will be issued a state certification card.

Lawrence at 150

Music, lectures kick off sesquicentennial events

An event later this month will officially kick off the Sesquicentennial Summer events celebrating the 150th anniversary of Lawrence’s founding.

The ceremony, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. May 30, will be at the Murphy-Bromelsick House at 10th and Delaware streets. The site is home to the Cottage Garden, an area landscaped by local master gardeners.

The event will include music, a talk by KU history professor Jonathan Earle and a program by Joyce Suellentrop of the Kansas Humanities Council.

Refreshments will be provided; attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair.

World Company sites named best on Web

The World Company was a double winner Wednesday at the 2004 EPpy Awards for online media.

KUsports.comwas named Best Internet Sports Service, and Lawrence.com was named Best Internet Entertainment Service. More than 500 entries from media companies across the world were nominated for the awards.

Other media outlets honored with two awards Wednesday were CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and Thirteen/WNET New York.

LJWorld.com also was nominated in the Best Overall Newspaper-affiliated Internet Service category, but lost to NYNewsday.com.

The awards were presented by Editor & Publisher and MediaWeek magazines at the Interactive Media Conference & Trade Show in Atlanta.

Kansas University

Retired professor to lead annual Stop Day tour

Ted Johnson, retired Kansas University professor of French and Italian, will play host to his 12th annual Stop Day tour Friday.

The walking tour is designed for students and others to appreciate the KU campus and to engage in philosophical discussions.

The tour schedule is 9 a.m., Natural History Museum; 10 a.m., Lippincott Hall; 11 a.m., Twente Hall; noon, Watson Library and Murphy Hall; 1 p.m., lunch at the Burge Union; 2 p.m., Green Hall and KU Foundry; 3 p.m., Chi Omega fountain; 4 p.m., Campanile; and 5 p.m., Spooner Hall.

Specific topics of discussion are planned for each site.
