5-year carrier wins J-W scholarship

Ellie Lloyd starts her days early delivering the Lawrence Journal-World and ends it with an after-school activity or studying.

Lloyd, a senior at Lawrence High School, is this year’s Journal-World Scholarship recipient. Journal-World circulation manager Joe Lewis presented her with the $2,000 scholarship Wednesday night during the high school’s awards ceremony.

“She’s an excellent carrier and provides excellent service,” Lewis said. “Rain, snow, sleet, she’s there day in and day out.”

Lloyd has been delivering the Journal-World since she was in the seventh grade. She delivers in the Yellowstone Drive area to about 30 customers.

“I walk, unless its Sunday with the big paper or there is lightning, then I drive,” Lloyd said.

The only serious problem Lloyd can recall experiencing on her route was during an ice storm a couple of years ago “trying to make it up a hill,” she said.

Then there was a time a dog took out after her. “It stopped just before it got to me,” she said.

Lloyd’s extracurricular activities also were a factor in earning her a scholarship, Lewis said. Lloyd has many, including cheerleading, diving, gymnastics, student council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Lloyd, daughter of Dicksie and John Lloyd, is planning to attend Kansas University but isn’t sure what her major will be.
