Lions earn split for seniors

Nightcap win in home finale 'special' for Lawrence

Lawrence High’s softball doubleheader Tuesday night was supposed to be all about three seniors.

Two LHS juniors made sure it was.

After blowing a late-inning lead to Shawnee Mission South in a 2-1 first-game loss, Lisa Pearse and Whitney Juneau sparked Lawrence to a 2-0 victory in the second game at Holcom Sports Complex.

“We really wanted to send them away with something special,” Pearse said.

Despite giving up eight hits, Pearse pitched her way out of three jams with seven Raiders in scoring position.

Then Juneau provided the power. Her double deep over the SM South center fielder in the sixth proved to be the game-winner.

“I was going up there was something to prove to myself,” said Juneau, who also stroked a single during a seventh-inning rally in the Lions’ opening-game defeat.

“But also I wanted get it done for the three seniors.”

Danielle Huff, Jennifer Narcomey and Diane Riat were honored in a formal announcement between games and had an informal celebration with fans after the nightcap.

LHS coach Reenie Stogsdill said the threesome had to be most satisfied with ending their home careers with a win.

“I’m really happy that we were able to come away with one for them in the second,” Stogsdill said. “But we just didn’t come to play in that first game. That effect lingered into our second game as well.”

In the first game, LHS had a 1-0 after the sixth inning, but the Raiders scored twice in a two-out rally in the top of the seventh. Juneau took the loss for the Lions.

LHS (9-9) will play a makeup game at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Olathe North.
