Lions feel like winners

LHS tops Vikings, 4-3

For Lawrence High sophomore Brian Heere, a harmless senior joke might turn out to be a hilarious good-luck charm.

Heere became a fan favorite Tuesday night at Ice Field, and it wasn’t because of his hot bat. Instead, it was the Shania Twain song, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” a hit that played prior to each of Heere’s plate appearances.

“The seniors played a trick on me for senior week,” Heere said. “But I think I’m going to keep it now.”

Good idea.

The girl-power country music jam worked wonders for Heere, who stroked two doubles and scored the winning run in Lawrence High’s 4-3 LHS victory over Shawnee Mission West.

Heere cranked a two-out pitch off the right-field wall in the third inning.

He then plugged the left-center-field gap for another double to lead off the sixth.

With the score tied at 3 late, the latter of the two-baggers probably was the most timely hit of the game.

“He’s finally starting to see it and drive the ball a lot better,” LHS coach David Petry said. “Hopefully, that will continue.”

Lawrence High's Joe Crane, right, takes a lead off first base after driving in the go-ahead run for the Lions in the bottom of the sixth inning. LHS beat Shawnee Mission West, 4-3, Tuesday at Ice Field.

Heere advanced to third on Courtney Hutchinson’s groundout and scored the winning run when senior Joe Crane reached on an error with two outs.

The Lions (7-8 overall, 4-5 Sunflower League) then shut down the Vikings in the seventh, with pitcher David Freeman retiring the top of the order 1-2-3.

Freeman pitched a complete game, striking out four and walking one batter. His only shaky inning was the fourth, when he surrendered five singles — all a glove-length away from being fielded or caught in the infield.

The Vikings scored two in that frame and one in the second inning, but nothing else.

“They started getting onto him a little bit, so we talked about mixing up his pitches a little bit more,” Petry said. “He threw his change-up a little bit more to their 3-4-5 hitters, and it kept them in check the rest of the game. He pitched a great game.”

Senior Tom Bush went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and senior Kyle Unruh added a two-run single in the third inning. The Lions were outhit 9-8, but for once, the luck seemed to be on their side.

“This group of kids is going to go out and keep competing,” Petry said. “It’s nice to see them start to get some results. They continue to work hard and compete, and that’s what we’ve asked them to do.”

LHS plays again Thursday at Shawnee Mission Northwest.
