Natural beauty

To the editor:

Whenever I have had visitors from out of town, out of state, out of country, after accompanying them to places of special interest in town and on the campus, I always suggest a drive along the Scenic River Road where, depending on the season, so much is to be seen, heard and felt of the natural woodland. There is so little of this left now anywhere near cities.

This is one of Lawrence’s greatest attractions for me and so many, particularly urban-living visitors. Most of them have never been close to a natural river landscape, much less have even heard of an egret or a painted bunting. It’s true that the development, narrowly rejected last week by the County Commission — though the door was left open for further negotiation — is only adjacent to that lovely landscape, but does anyone believe that, once begun, development would be confined for long?

We fight against pillaging of the nation’s “last wild places;” let us consider that this small area is one of those.

Mrs. Albert Bloch,
