KU graduate tapped as Maryland regent

Adela Acosta, who received a master’s degree in education from Kansas University, has been named to the University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents, the governing body for Maryland public universities.

Acosta, the first-ever Hispanic member of the board, is principal of Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Prince George’s County. She spent 10 years working in the Maryland public schools system after a career with the Department of Justice.

Maryland’s Board of Regents consists of 17 members and is responsible for creating and enforcing policy for the 13 public universities in Maryland. Members are appointed by the governor. Acosta’s term begins July 1.
