Against violence

To the editor:

On March 8, One Hundred Good Women, through the V-Day Worldwide Campaign, presented Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” to a packed house at Liberty Hall. The performance was profound, provocative and tremendous fun.

Because a majority of the expense was underwritten by generous donations from businesses and individuals in the area, over $5,400 was donated locally to Women’s Transitional Care Services and GaDuGi SafeCenter/ RVSS and to the V-Day Spotlight on Murdered and Missing Women and Girls in Juarez, Mexico. On behalf of One Hundred Good Women I would like to thank the sponsors and all that helped make this event possible and so successful.

In addition, we presented the Vagina Warrior Award to Sarah Jane Russell, executive director of GaDuGi SafeCenter/RVSS, and Sherry Bear with the Topeka Battered Women’s Task Force for their continued service to the community, working toward the goal of ending violence against women and girls. Eve Ensler’s definition of a Vagina Warrior is “one that has witnessed violence, grieved it, transformed it and then does extraordinary work to make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else in their community.” These two incredible women embody that definition.

And, finally, we would like to thank the cast, everyone involved “behind the scenes” and especially all those that attended this very important event.
