Lions fourth in swim quad

LHS short-handed during spring break

? Melissa Farve picked up Lawrence High’s lone individual win and was one of three Lions with a second-place finish at a swimming and diving quadrangular Thursday at Emporia High.

Farve won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 backstroke. Julia Szabo (100 fly) and Meredith West (diving) were the Lions’ other runners-up.

As a team, short-handed LHS placed fourth in the four-team race.

Emporia won with 410 points and was followed by Manhattan (371), Hutchinson (304) and LHS (201).

“It’s spring break, so half our team is gone,” LHS coach Ryan Adams said. “Manhattan’s on spring break, too. I think it definitely would have been a different meet if not for spring break, for us and Manhattan. But the first meet is always really crazy anyway.

“It’s not a great indication of how the rest of the season will go. A lot of girls are real nervous about the first meet. It’s real nice for the new girls, because they got a lot of attention.”

Szabo was the only LHS swimmer to qualify for state.

Lawrence will travel to Shawnee Mission North on Tuesday.
