Money talks

To the editor:

I am very much opposed to a Wal-Mart being located adjacent to Free State High School. I am particularly concerned because of the proximity of the numerous young drivers.

I must confess I am a “closet Wal-Mart shopper!” Yes, I am even willing to admit that there are times the idea of having a Wal-Mart-type store a little closer to my neighborhood has its appeal. I might even support a Wal-Mart being put in North Lawrence where the outlet mall lies empty.

However, the community opposes the Sixth Street intersection, and we already have one overbuilt (31st and Iowa streets) intersection. We don’t need another!

Since everyone knows it is money and power that talk, every citizen in Lawrence has the power and money to get a message to Wal-Mart that we do not want one at that location. Your power rests in your wallet, a voice you do have the power to use.

As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
