Nothing to fear

To the editor:

I am highly disappointed and concerned about the beliefs you shared in your Saturday Column (March 6). “Hispanic population growth changing the face of America.” That the growth of the Hispanic population in our country “could result in serious and dangerous problems for all citizens,” as stated in your commentary, is outrageous and terrifying. Your bigotry has never shone so clear.

It is one thing to state, as your commentary did, that the Hispanic population in America is growing, but your personal opinion about this fact was grossly ignorant and extremely prejudicial. How dare you criticize a population of people simply because they are different than you. Your warning that “to close our eyes to this upcoming dramatic change in the U.S. would be foolish, dangerous and shortsighted,” is frightening.

It is time you realize it is the mosaic of this country that makes it so beautiful. Please erase your fears and embrace those who are different than you. Fear only hardens your heart and allows you to say such hurtful things as you wrote in your commentary. It is time to offer an apology, not only to Hispanics but to all you have hurt with your ignorant words.

Donna Carlson,

Lawrence

Editor’s note: The facts presented in the March 6 Saturday Column were those of Samuel Huntington, president of the Harvard Academy for International Area Studies. The Saturday Column merely pointed out the growth of the Hispanic population in the United States and some of the possible results of that growth.
