Behavior is key

To the editor:

Mr. Powell, in his letter of March 7, says that religion and law are different and one does not make the other. He could not be more wrong. Our whole system of laws is founded on a morality steeped in religion, the belief in a deity. But let’s talk about natural law.

Please explain to me how homosexuality fits into natural law and the survival of a species. Nobody is saying two people can’t love and nurture each other. What is being said is that at the root of homosexuality is the desire for two people, of the same gender, to have sex with each other, and society as a whole is not going to put its stamp of approval on this behavior.

It has been the practice of this minority to incrementally move to a position of acceptance, in relation to their behavior, because they do not want to accept the fact that they might be perceived as sexual deviants. Society is not obligated to approve of a specific behavior.

Voting is not behavior. Getting a drink of water from a public fountain is not a behavior. Owning or renting property is not a behavior. These are civil rights. Homosexuality and heterosexuality are behaviors.
