KTA to unveil memorial for Notre Dame coach
Matfield Green — It has been nearly 73 years since legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne was killed in a plane crash near Cottonwood Falls north of Wichita.
On March 31, the anniversary of Rockne’s death, the Kansas Turnpike Authority will unveil a new memorial to Rockne at the Matfield Green service area. It will occupy 175 square feet inside the service area at milepost 97 on the turnpike.
The memorial will feature photographic panels illustrating Rockne’s life and audio clips of his motivational speeches.
The public unveiling ceremony will be at 10 a.m., and speakers will include College Football Hall of Fame Executive Director Bernie Kish.
Appraiser’s Office
Property assessment forms due Monday
Signed assessment forms for boats, trailers and other taxable personal property are due Monday to the Douglas County Appraiser’s Office.
Forms should include a list of each owner’s personal property, such as boats, trailers, mobile homes, airplanes, Jet Skis, large trucks, mo-peds and business equipment.
The appraiser’s office mailed 9,000 such forms to property owners in January. Taxpayers who did not receive a form may pick one up from the office at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass. For more information, call 832-5289.
Property owners missing the 5 p.m. Monday filing deadline will be charged a late fee, officials said.
Tax bills will be mailed to owners in November.

Interest in conference on Brown case increases
Registration has picked up significantly for a Kansas University conference to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka case.
Two free programs — Monday’s speech by Harvard professor Lani Guinier and the March 16 speech by author Julianne Malveaux — are filled.
Guinier’s presentation will be simulcast on a television in the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union for those who sign up to be on a waiting list for the program.
Fewer than 200 tickets remain for the conference opening event at 2 p.m. Sunday, featuring the Rust College A Cappella Choir and PBS journalist Tony Brown. The program is free, but advance tickets are required.
Speakers also are scheduled March 15-17. KU is offering a one-day registration fee of $50. Full conference registration is $130 for the public or $45 for teachers and students.
