Sunday showers cause no flooding in Lawrence

Rain fell most of Sunday in Lawrence, but despite a daylong flood watch issued by the National Weather Service, no problems were reported.

Less than an inch — 0.78 inches — of rain was the official Lawrence total.

The only flooding in the immediate area occurred in Osage County when water was reported over the road Sunday morning at the intersection of U.S. Highways 56 and 75, the weather service in Topeka reported.

Although today will remain cloudy, it should also be dry, said 6News chief meteorologist Matt Sayers. Clouds will decrease throughout the day and the high should be about 79 degrees, he said.

Victim in hospital after fight outside strip club

A fight early Sunday morning outside a Lawrence strip bar left one man unconscious and landed him in a Kansas City-area hospital, Lawrence Police said.

A suspect is being held in the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of aggravated battery. A formal charge is pending.

Shortly after 2 a.m. a patrol officer stopped at All Stars, 913 N. Second St., after driving by and seeing a fight in the parking lot, Sgt. Susan Hadl said. A man was found lying unconscious and a suspect had fled. The bar had just closed.

The victim, a man 26-year-old Dallas man, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then transferred by helicopter to a hospital in the Kansas City area, Hadl said. A police news release Sunday afternoon said he was in serious condition.

About 3:30 a.m. police investigating the incident located the suspect, a 31-year-old Lawrence man. and took him in for questioning. He was taken to jail.

Hadl said it was unclear what led to the fight.

KU School of Education honors state official

Andy Tompkins, Kansas commissioner of education, was given the Kansas University School of Education Alumni Distinguished Service Award during the school’s annual recognition ceremony May 22 at the Lied Center.

The award goes to a KU education graduate who “has contributed exemplary service to the fields of education or human services.”

Tompkins received his doctorate in educational administration from KU in 1977. He has been commissioner of education since 1996.
