Jefferson County accident kills 40-year-old Kansan

Wreck occurred Friday night on U.S. 24

A southeast Kansas woman was killed and a young girl riding with her was injured Friday in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 24 in Jefferson County.

Carol L. Shull, 40, Peru, was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to the Shawnee County Coroner’s Office, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

The accident occurred about 10:30 p.m.

Breanna Shull, 5, also of Peru, was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. She was a passenger in a 2000 Mazda pickup truck Carol Shull was driving.

The pickup struck a 1998 Ford truck driven by James W. Parbst, 26, Kansas City. He was taken to University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. Hospital officials said they couldn’t confirm or deny that he was a patient there.

A nursing supervisor at Children’s Mercy said she had no record of a Breanna Shull being a patient there.

According to the patrol report, the Mazda was eastbound on U.S. 24 about 1.5 miles east of Perry when it crossed the centerline and collided with the westbound truck driven by Parbst. Neither Carol Shull nor Breanna were wearing seat belts, the patrol report said. Parbst was wearing a seat belt, it said.
