Suspect arrested in fatal shooting

A traffic stop led to the arrest of a man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting at a Manhattan trailer park.

The Riley County Police Department said Saturday that Lamarques A. “Tez” Channel, 21, of Manhattan, was arrested Friday night on Interstate 70 near Leavenworth.

State troopers arrested Channel on a warrant charging him with first-degree murder in the death of Anthony Bingham, 19.

Bingham was shot in the abdomen early Monday in a confrontation, police said.

State troopers also arrested Katrina G. Taylor, 22, of Manhattan, on a warrant charging her with aiding a felon. She was the driver in the traffic stop.

Homes to be sold in first-time lottery

Two houses in Missouri are among 10 in the nation being offered to first-time homebuyers through a federally sponsored lottery.

A house in south Kansas City and another in St. Louis are part of Homewise, a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the National Association of Home Builders, the National Housing Endowment and a number of mortgage and home financing companies.

Under the program, the Housing Endowment will buy the houses from HUD, have them renovated by volunteers and sell them at a 50 percent discount to people who are chosen through a lottery.

The buyers must sign a 15-year mortgage, make their payments on time for five years and stay in the home. To qualify, buyers must be first-time homeowners and attend homebuying counseling.

Three killed in wreck

Three people died when a sport utility vehicle collided with a car on a Cowley County road, authorities said.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the victims as Jim Milliron, 75, a passenger in the SUV, and Tyler Merz, 20, and Colt Bean, 19, passengers in the car. All three were from Arkansas City.

The crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. Friday when the SUV’s driver attempted a left turn and pulled into the car’s path, the patrol said.
