Upfront costs

To the editor:

If Kansas University believes that sports seats are worth the amounts being asked through the “points” system, that is OK. However, the prices should be listed upfront on the tickets. They are not “gifts” to the university, and wealthy donors should not be able to take tax deductions for the Williams Fund if they receive preferred-seating season tickets. Maybe we should also go so far as declaring the value of the KU staff’s preferred seating as “taxable compensation” based on the values cited by the proponents of the “points system.”

University sports have become commercial products, and there is nothing right in treating basketball seating as an educational deduction for the fans. Let us put the true cost of these tickets upfront and see how many “donations” the Williams Fund can draw.
