Domestic woes

To the editor:

While trying to figure out how to buy food and pay bills next month, keep this in mind: In 2001, 476 more Americans died of malnutrition than terrorism.

Contrary to Bush’s claim of a strong economy, large numbers of Americans are willing to risk their lives in Iraq for a paycheck. Parents are leaving their families behind, not knowing if they will return with a fist full of money or in a box. We are suffering due to billions being spent on a war that is rapidly losing support from both sides of the political fence.

While none of us would support a regime that taxes the poor and forgives the rich … oh, wait, that’s exactly what Bush is doing! According to Mother Jones, the “cost of the Bush tax cuts this year alone is enough to give $9,793 to each of the 2.9 million who’ve lost their jobs since Bush took office.” Sure makes that $600 refund seem condescending.

While assuring the Iraqi people health care, jobs and education, Americans are denied medical care, school programs are being cut and many schools have been closed altogether. Unemployment is on a slow decline, but millions of jobs are being outsourced overseas.

After 9-11, we had the support and respect of the world. Now, our allies are bailing out of Iraq, like rats off a sinking ship. If Bush is re-elected, this ship will sink. He’s already on the plank. All we have to do is push him off in November.
