Sticky, warm weather ahead

If you haven’t turned on your air conditioner or watered your grass yet, this could be the week — temperatures will reach up into the 90s today and Tuesday with no rain in sight for several days.

“It’s the warmest weather yet for 2004,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist. “It’s going to feel sticky.”

Today’s high will reach 91 degrees, with south winds 12 to 24 mph under mostly sunny skies. Overnight, the low will drop to 72 by early Tuesday morning.

Tuesday will be another warm day, with the high reaching 92 and south winds 15 to 25 mph, Sayers said.

The rest of the week will also continue to be warm, with the high reaching 86 on Wednesday and 89 by Thursday, he said. This isn’t record-breaking heat for early June — records are in the upper 90s — but the average temperature for this time of year is 84, Sayers said.

So far in June, Lawrence has received only about a tenth of an inch of rain, which fell Saturday.

“We need rainfall. But that’s not in the forecast until later this week,” Sayers said. There’s a 20 percent chance of rain on Friday morning and Saturday, he said.
