‘My’ America?

To the editor:

Where is “my” America?

In a small western Kansas town, as a child, memories of World War I events were enhanced by my father’s offerings to the war effort. He gave his support through speeches, selling war bonds and as a Santa Fe railroad agent.

These memories were the beginning of my patriotism and the love and honor of my America and the American flag.

I remember the Depression of the ’30s and the struggle for existence.

Then came World War II and the bonding of a nation in the support and conclusion of those terrifying times. These events further developed my love of country, devotion to its greatness, and the feeling of total unity within this nation.

This was “my” America.

Soon after these times came the Vietnam and Korean conflicts and the beginning of a division in our country caused by those who opposed some of the essential needs of our government. It was also at this time that the deterioration began by the influx of immigrants, many illegals.

For a short time there was bonding following 9-11. Immediately it was the wish of the president to send armed forces into Iraq.

Now, in May 2004, the tenets this country stands for have been marred. The humility and disgrace the United States has suffered will take many years to repair.

I wonder after the fall of the Roman Empire if a person such as I might have uttered, “Where is ‘my’ Roman Empire?”

Dear God, help my beloved America!
