Life-saving move
To the editor:
Friday, May 28, near the 5 p.m. rush hour before a holiday weekend, we were headed to our new home in Baldwin, just released from the hospital with an infant daughter.
As we approached the intersection of 19th and Iowa, there was a stalled car in the right lane and the three cars in front of us were required to slam on their brakes in order to avoid hitting it. Just like the cars preceding us, we hit our brakes and, with the sound of squealing tires, barely made it to a stop when both of us looked to the rear and knew there was no way we could avoid being hit by the cars behind us.
Although we do not know your name, we owe you our sincerest gratitude for the reaction you made to avoid a wreck. You were a woman and you were driving a maroon car.
As you quickly approached behind us, we noticed the large U-Haul truck behind you. We were bracing for a collision when you quickly reacted to avoid the accident by driving up on the curb and into the grass, avoiding us and our infant daughter as well as anyone else that would have been potentially injured at the time.
We both made a sigh of relief as you simply drove away during the rush-hour traffic. Had I been able to, I would have jumped out of the car and hugged you with all my strength. You’re truly a life saver and we just wanted you to know how much we appreciated your quick thinking and kind heart.
Dennis and Rachelle Vigna,
Baldwin
