Cookie money buys birthday presents for foster children

The Brownie Girl Scouts of Troop 587 made about $350 in cookie-sale profits this year.

They could have spent it all on themselves, but instead they had the idea to use some of the money to buy toys for children who don’t have many.

“It’s just fair, so people have toys — a toy — to play with,” said troop member Cienna Sorell, 6, who just finished first grade at the Corpus Christi campus of Lawrence Catholic School.

With some help from Lawrence-Douglas County Promise, an agency that matches resources with needs, the Brownie troop’s leaders connected with KVC Behavioral Health Care, 1202 E. 23rd St. The agency serves about 70 foster children in the region whose families could use the financial help of donated birthday gifts.

“We reserve our funds for basic needs,” said Lydia Diebolt, KVC’s resources coordinator. “We don’t have a birthday fund where they make sure every kid gets a birthday present. There’s just not the money for it.”

On Friday, the troop members — brown vests, missing front teeth and all — arrived at KVC carrying five wrapped presents that will go to all foster children served by the agency who have June birthdays. The cards on the presents read, “Happy Birthday from Troop 587.”

“We are so grateful to you,” Diebolt told the troop. “You are so nice to do this.”

In all, the troop spent about $150.

“It was really fun, and it felt really good,” Cienna said. “I think it will feel good to them that they were noticed.”

The Brownies are the second party in recent months to make donations to KVC for foster children. In March, 11-year-old Grace Miller of Lawrence delivered 71 backpacks and duffel bags she collected after reading that foster children sometimes carry their belongings in trash bags when they move from home to home.
