Moving tribute

To the editor:

Memorial Day is always a special time of remembrance, and this year, with the convergence of so many serious events marking this particular time in the history of our country, my husband and I wanted to join with others in expressing our gratitude to the men and women who have given so much for the rest of us.

As we approached the cemetery for the service held in their honor, the first sight we saw was the avenue of American flags, too numerous to count, but how beautiful they were, flying gently in the breeze. What those flags symbolized for us visually was beyond words to express.

We want to say a heartfelt thanks to our neighbor, Ken Fisher, and his team of dedicated volunteers from the American Legion post who had faithfully risen before “dawn’s early light” to place the many large American flags around the cemetery. What a gift they and all who participated in the morning’s service gave us in helping to mark Memorial Day is such a moving, special way.
