Sunflower Girls State begins next week at KU
More than 400 incoming high school seniors from Kansas will be at Kansas University beginning Sunday for the 62nd annual American Legion Auxiliary Kansas Sunflower Girls State.
Delegates, sponsored by their local American Legion auxiliary units, will participate in a weeklong study of government. Most sessions will be at the Lied Center and the Dole Institute of Politics, and the event also will include a trip to the state Capitol.
Presenters throughout the week will include Atty. Gen. Phill Kline; Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh; State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins; state Rep. Barbara Ballard, D-Lawrence; and state Sen. Karin Brownlee, R-Olathe.
During the week, delegates will campaign and hold elections for officers. They will hold an inauguration ceremony June 10.
Participants will stay in Ellsworth Residence Hall.
