To the editor:
I read the Journal-World online and am responding to the article about Stephen Moore's organization (J-W, Sunday), Club for Growth, based in Washington, D.C., coming to Kansas to campaign and contribute money to Conservative Anti-Tax candidates in our state. It should be noted that the last high-profile campaign Stephen Moore was involved in was a campaign against moderate Republican Sen. Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania. Moore's conservative candidate lost.
Perhaps someone should tell Mr. Moore that Sen. Specter has Kansas roots in Russell.
Also, the article mentions that he intends to focus on Rep. Bill Kassebaum's campaign. Rep. Kassebaum is the son of former Sen. Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker, highly respected in our state. Mr. Moore is supporting Kassebaum's conservative Republican opponent. This is the same candidate Kassebaum defeated two years ago. That campaign was featured in a PBS documentary. His mother was there helping him.
Mr. Moore wants to purge moderate Republicans from his party. It's time for moderates in both parties to stand up to these efforts. I suppose if they are successful in purging the Republican Party, they will go after the moderate Democrats next.
