Closet-cleaning sale promises bargains on Jayhawk apparel

Athletic department event is Saturday

For Jayhawk fans it will likely be the best garage sale since former Kansas University Athletic Director Al Bohl cleaned his closets of all items crimson and blue.

“There really is some great stuff here,” said Kansas University Athletic Department’s marketing director Andrew Steinberg, surveying the six, gym-length rows of tables piled high with KU T-shirts, jerseys, sweatshirts, jackets and other Jayhawk gear.

Marketing interns Carl Swenson, left, and Ross Cleveland sort through replica basketball jerseys Thursday at the Horejsi Center at Kansas University. Doors will open to the public at 8 a.m. Saturday for the sale of KU apparel. Items from all KU sports teams and the KU Store will be sold at deeply discounted prices with proceeds to go to the Williams Fund.

The department’s shelf-clearing sale begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center, immediately south and west of Allen Fieldhouse. No early callers.

“The goal is not to have to pack up any of this stuff at the end of the day,” Steinberg said. “I’m guessing we have over 6,000 pieces of apparel here, so it’ll be priced to move.”

Hundreds of T-shirts are marked a dollar each. Nike caps are $5; golf shirts, $5; matching jackets and pants, $10. Sales are cash only.

About half of the items are game-day uniforms — men’s and women’s. Some have been worn, others are brand new. The other half are promotional T-shirts.

“Everything that’s in here, we bought at some time in the past,” Steinberg said, explaining that most of the T-shirts and sweatshirts are excess inventory from KUstore.com, the department’s online store.

“What happens is you order items in anticipation of an event, like reaching the Final Four,” he said. “You sell all you can but, inevitably, you have some left over.”

Most items are less than three years old, except for the football jerseys.

“I’m told some of the football stuff goes back 10 or 15 years,” Steinberg said.

Non-apparel items include posters, videos, media guides, commemorative books, golf bags, equipment bags and batting helmets.

A year ago, bargain-hunting Jayhawk fans stormed Bohl’s personal garage sale, clearing the tables in about 30 minutes.

At the Horejsi Center, crowd-control measures will be minimal.

“We’ll have some people here, but we’re confident that people will show good judgment,” Steinberg said. “We’ll have six cashiers, each with an assistant. Fortunately, the building is air-conditioned.”

Sales proceeds will be deposited in the Williams Fund, the department’s scholarship account.
