Three injured in pickup-car accident

Three people were injured when two vehicles collided this afternoon at the intersection of Indiana and Sixth streets.

One victim, a man who was driving a pickup truck that was knocked onto its side, was taken by helicopter ambulance to a Kansas City area hospital. He had to be extricated from the truck by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical crews.

A man and a woman who were in the car were taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, said Sgt. Dan Ward, police spokesman. He did not know the extent of their injuries. The names of the victims were not yet available.

The pickup truck was eastbound on Sixth Street and was attempting to turn north on Indiana when it was struck by the westbound car, Ward said.

Melanie Bill was inside her house about a block away when she heard the crash.

“I heard the impact and it sounded pretty bad,” Bill said. “All my windows were closed.”
