Painting volunteers needed
Agency: Independence Inc.
Address: 2001 Haskell Ave.
Contact Person: Susan Mikesic, 841-0333
Independence Inc. would like to recruit volunteers to assist in painting the home of a Lawrence resident who has a disability. It is essential that this project be completed for this person to live independently. Supplies will be provided. A small group or club should be able to accomplish the task in a single day.
Immediate volunteer needs
- Independence Inc. also needs two or three volunteers with a pickup truck who would be capable of lifting a donated hospital bed and transporting it to the Lawrence home of a person with a disability. For more information, contact Stephanie at 841-0333.
- Douglas County Senior Meals needs volunteer meal delivery drivers this summer in Lawrence. Volunteers can deliver meals any day Monday through Friday during the lunch hour, which may be scheduled flexibly. For more information, contact Mary Feltz at Douglas County Senior Services, 842-05453.
- Lawrence Habitat for Humanity volunteers are constructing a new Habitat home, and new volunteers are welcome to participate in the building.
A workday is scheduled for this Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. at the construction site, 1816 Atherton Court. Lunch will be provided to volunteers, who must be 16 or older. For more information or for directions to the site, contact the Habitat for Humanity office, open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 832-0777.
- The March of Dimes will be holding the “Jail and Bail” fund-raising event on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Hereford House, and volunteers are needed to help run the event. Volunteer “bailiffs” greet “prisoners” and take mug shots, escort them before the judge and seat prisoners in jail and provide instructions for their hourlong sentence.
Volunteer “court clerks” review pledge forms and credit-card slips and maintain running totals of pledges. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.
