Services set Monday for El Dorado airman

? Family and friends will gather in Arkansas on Monday to remember a Kansas airman who was killed during an attack in Iraq.

Services for Air Force Staff Sgt. Dustin W. Peters, 25, a member of the 314th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base, will be in Nashville, Ark.

Peters was killed July 11 when his convoy was hit by homemade bombs about 150 miles north of Baghdad, base officials said.

Peters’ grandmother, Shirley Lehman, lives in Enid, as does his father, Dennis.

On Thursday, Peters’ young son was presented his father’s Bronze Star Medal for Valor and his Purple Heart by Lt. Gen. John D. Hopper, Air Force Air Education and Training Command vice commander.

The Bronze Star Medal is given to individuals who distinguish themselves by heroism, outstanding achievement or meritorious service while serving in a combat theater, according to base officials.

Peters received his for heroism.

He is survived by his mother, a sister and his 4-year-old son by his former wife in Wichita, Kan.

The El Dorado, Kan., resident entered the Air Force in January 1997, completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base and technical training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

At Little Rock Air Force Base, where he arrived in November 2000, Peters served as a noncommissioned officer in charge of equipment support for the 314th.
