Topeka — A forum featuring the three candidates vying for the Republican Party nomination in Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District, which includes east Lawrence, will be aired at 9 p.m. Tuesday on KTWU-TV, Channel 11 on Sunflower Cablevision.

The program “Insight Politics: The Third District Primary” will be moderated by Bob Beatty, an assistant professor of political science at Washburn University. The forum will be taped earlier in the day.

Board ready to schedule public hearing on budget

The Lawrence school board on Tuesday likely will approve a notice to allow the district’s budget hearing to be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9.

By law, the district is required to publish the time and date for a formal budget hearing prior to adoption of the spending blueprint.

The board on Tuesday also will consider an annual agreement with Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, a change in the 2004-05 school calendar and participation in the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center, also known as Greenbush.

The board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive.

Boys & Girls Club benefits from fund-raiser

About 800 people attended the Big Pig, an annual fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence.

The event was Saturday night on the lawn in front of Meadowbrook Apartments on 15th Street and Crestline Drive.

For $20, attendees ate at a barbecue buffet, participated in silent and live auctions and listened to the music of Dr. Zhivegas. Organizers said last year’s event, along with a golf tournament, brought in about $40,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence.

“This is a really important fund-raiser for us. It’s about double the size of anything else we do,” said Janet Murphy, executive director, Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence.

The Boys & Girls Club runs seven sites in Lawrence that serve nearly 1,000 children, Murphy said.
