Crack cocaine habit fed by K.C. car burglaries

Kansas City, Mo. — A Kansas City man who confessed to stealing valuables from about 1,000 cars to sustain a crack cocaine habit has been charged with 15 felony counts in a string of car burglaries, authorities said.

Adell Jackson, 37, said in court documents that he broke into about 1,000 vehicles seeking valuables, which he sold for crack. The Jackson County prosecutor said more charges were being investigated.

“(But) if he’s charged with 40 or 400, the time served might ultimately be the same if convicted,” said John Liebnitz, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office.

Jackson would open doors and windows with a screwdriver to steal items, police said.

Prosecutors say Jackson is charged with stealing items valued at $4,600 from one car in April, then other items including a cell phone, a radar detector, a stereo and CDs from other cars. The robberies began after his release from jail in February.

Police first arrested Jackson last July when he was identified as a suspect in several thefts. He was subsequently released, then arrested again by police Friday night.
