Jayhawk safe

To the editor:

The letter writer (“KU Symbols,” July 14) who fears that Kansas University is going to “mess with” the Jayhawk and the seal can lay her fears to rest. KU is conducting an opinion survey of faculty, staff, students and alumni as part of a process designed to help us establish a stronger visual identity for KU. The appearance of the Jayhawk and the seal are not going to change as part of this process.

We do intend to create a new “word mark” for stationery, Web sites, campus signage and other purposes. We will also establish guidelines for the appropriate use of all our symbols. Most of the funding for this project is private. No tuition revenue is involved. With record enrollment last year, KU clearly has a great “product” at a great price. The goal of the integrated marketing initiative now under way — of which this project is one part — is to build on our existing strengths and enhance the image, reputation and visibility of KU.
