More showers possible this afternoon

An overnight system of thunderstorms that crackled and boomed through the region brought more than 1.6 inches of rain to the Lawrence area by mid morning.

“The thunderstorms have ended for the morning. But there is a chance for another isolated thunderstorm this afternoon,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

As of 8 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport had received 1.66 inches from the thunderstorms, which began about 4 a.m. Wyandotte County, which received several inches of rain overnight, was under a flash flood watch until 11 a.m., Schack said.

Schack said that by 8:30 a.m., thunderstorms had moved off to the east, leaving behind cloudy skies for the Lawrence area. The temperatures were in the mid 70s this morning and were to rise to 85 by mid afternoon. Schack said

By 4 p.m., another cold front will be moving through the region, bringing the possibility of isolated thunderstorms, Schack said.

“A very nice weekend is shaping up,” Schack said. “The shower activity will be ending today, with a dry weekend in store.”

The low will drop to 67 by Saturday morning, with the high reaching 84 Saturday afternoon, she said. Sunday’s morning low will be 64, with the high reaching 86.
