Heat index soars past 110

Heat advisory issued for two area counties

It’s going to be another hot day, with temperatures in the upper 90s, plus a heat index that had soared to 111 by mid afternoon.

“If you have to be outside today, make sure you wear light clothing and drink plenty of water,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. Schack also suggested checking on children, elderly friends and relatives and making sure pets kept outside have water.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today for Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties. Schack said Lawrence will have similar conditions, but is not included in the advisory area.

The high today was expected to get up to 97 in Lawrence. As of 3 p.m., the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 96, with the heat index of 111.

“It will be very hot outside. Take precautions. But there is some relief in store,” she said.

Overnight, a cold front will move in to disrupt the hot air mass, bringing a chance for thunderstorms. The temperature will drop overnight, with the low reaching 75 by Wednesday morning, she said.

Wednesday won’t be as hot, with the thermometer reading climbing to 87 by Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday’s morning low will be 72, with the high reaching 87. There’s another chance for isolated thunderstorms on Thursday night, Schacksaid.
