To the editor:

In his criticism of Thomas Frank, George Will (Journal-World, July 8) has unwittingly helped Frank prove his case. He has provided yet another instance of a conservative voice attempting to shift discourse away from economic justice to a bogus concern for “values.”

Will attempts to reduce “What’s the Matter with Kansas” to a call for materialism. What hypocrisy! As an advocate of welfare for the rich and a ban on redistribution for the poor, Will has often shown his own support for materialism. Now to suggest that Americans generally, and conservatives specifically, reject materialism strains belief.

Thomas Frank warns us not to be distracted by such arguments. They are part of the great shell game that discourages people from voting for their own interests.
