Overnight storm brings more heavy rain

A strong thunderstorm brought crackling lightning, high winds and heavy rains through Lawrence early this morning, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We did see some severe weather roll through the area about 4:30 this morning,” Schack said. “It was a nasty storm.”

The thunderstorm brought winds in excess of 70 mph, between 2 and 3 inches of rain, lightning and reports of penny-sized hail to the Lawrence area.

“It was quite a show,” Schack said.

The storm also moved through Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties, Schack said. There were short power outages in Lawrence’s downtown during the brunt of the storm, she said.

A flash flood warning was in effect in the Lawrence area until 7:45 a.m. but was to continue until 9:30 a.m. in Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties, she said. However, by 7 a.m., most of the severe weather had moved on through the area and into Missouri, she said.

“We’re left with a cloudy morning in our region,” Schack said.

Temperatures this morning were in the upper 60s.

Today ‘s high will be 79, which is well below average, with northwest winds 10 mph. Clouds will decrease in the afternoon, Schack said.

She predicted that the relatively cool temperatures will continue overnight. The low is expected to fall to 57, which would match the record low for Wednesday’s date, she said.

Wednesday’s high will climb to 83 under mostly sunny skies.

There is a possibility for some isolated thundershowers on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, she said. The National Weather Service puts the chance at 20 percent.

Thursday’s morning low will be 67 with the high reaching 87, she said.
