Basketball windfall
To the editor:
To be consistent with Kansas University’s new athletic department priority, which is to maximize basketball income at any cost, a new program should be implemented concerning retired jerseys at Allen Fieldhouse. The current jerseys should be removed, and a points system should be established weighting dramatically toward contributions as the ticket program does.
A former player or player’s family would be able to contribute to KU to buy the jersey and jersey location. As is the case with the ticket program, a player who is a professional or has a major corporate sponsor would have the ability to bid more and buy a jersey location.
To be even more consistent with the ticket program, there would be no requirement to actually be a former player. Any individual with enough money or large corporate sponsor could simply outbid a former KU star player.
Finally, as is the case with ticket buyers, a retired jersey location would be good only for one year. Each year the jersey locations would be available to the highest bidder.
