KU funds

To the editor:

I am rather shocked that the Board of Regents feels comfortable raising Kansas University’s tuition 18 percent when these dollars are not even making it to the classroom. According to the Journal-World story, “KU should divulge Perkins’ salary package, AG says,” Lew Perkins, athletic director at KU, receives a base annual salary of $400,000. If that isn’t enough for Lew to survive on, he also gets fringe benefits that could total over a million dollars, including two cars and two country club memberships. I find this utterly disgusting!

Now, KU is suing students for standing up to claim KU and Bank of America mismanaged a trust left for the upkeep of a couple of scholarship halls. Does KU have no shame?

It is apparent to me that while professors and individual departments at KU strive for honesty and integrity, the administration seems to find those qualities out of style.

I would prefer my tuition dollars be spent in classrooms that lack basic resources, not on outrageous salaries and country club memberships.
