Holiday closings

Government offices and public services in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed Monday in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the General Services Administration and the federal courts.

The Lawrence Transit System will operate.

There will be no grass and leaf collection Monday. Commercial collection will be completed as scheduled.

To report a water or sewer emergency after business hours or during weekends and holidays, contact the Utilities Department at (785) 843-2685.

Parking at meters in downtown Lawrence will be free Monday.

Franklin, Jefferson and Leavenworth county offices will be closed.

Ottawa, Tonganoxie, Baldwin, McLouth, Oskaloosa, De Soto and Eudora city offices will be closed Monday.

Douglas County Senior Services while be closed. Lawrence Meals on Wheels will be delivered Monday.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday.

There will be no mail delivery Monday. UPS and FedEx deliveries also will not be made.

Liquor stores in Lawrence are allowed to be open Monday.

The Journal-World will be published Monday; USA Today will not.

The business office of the Journal-World will be open for walk-ins and phone inquiries from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday.

Parks, recreation

Most Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department facilities will be closed Sunday, including:

Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.; Community Building, 115 W. 11th St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St. and South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass.

Hours for Holcom Park Recreation Center, Community Building and East Lawrence Recreation Center will be from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday. South Park Recreation Center will also be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday for those wishing to register in a program or activity.

There will be no recreational classes, special events, special population classes, adult sports or youth sports on the holiday. All recreation classes, special population classes, adult sports and youth sports will resume Monday.

Prairie Park Nature Center will be open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday but will be closed Monday.

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Road, will be open and is accepting tee times for both Sunday and Monday.

The Aquatic Division will have altered hours for the holiday. The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., will be open from 1 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Sunday and will be open on its regular schedule, 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Monday.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open from 1 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Sunday and from 5:30 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. Monday.

South Park Wading Pool, 1131 Mass., will be closed Sunday and open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

There will be no Summer Playground on Monday, but the Mini Munchkin Camp and the Nature Summer Camps will run as scheduled. Summer Playground will resume on Tuesday.
