Area Fourth of July events

Baldwin

5 p.m. Sunday: Food, games, a dunk tank and a band at the high school ball field.

9 p.m.: Citizens for Baldwin City will sponsor a fireworks display.

Eudora

Dusk Sunday: Fireworks display, sponsored by Eudora Parks and Recreation, at the high school. Parking at the middle school.

Lawrence

10 a.m. Sunday: Neighborhood parade begins at Seventh and Ohio streets, ends at Buford M. Watson Jr. Park.

11 a.m. Sunday: Neighborhood parade begins at Tumbleweed and Sharon drives in northwest Lawrence.

6 p.m. Sunday: Bands play at Burcham Park, Second and Indiana streets.

9:45 p.m. Sunday: Lawrence Jaycees fireworks display at Burcham Park.

  • Shuttle buses sponsored by the Journal-World will run from 6 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. between downtown parking lots on Vermont and New Hampshire streets and the park. Shuttles will return to parking lots after the display.

McLouth

There will be a fireworks display Sunday night at McLouth Sports Complex.

Ottawa

The Ottawa Jaycees will sponsor a fireworks display at dusk Sunday in Forest Park.

Perry Lake

Will have a small-scale fireworks display at 9 p.m. Saturday at Perry Lake. There will be a boat parade at 4 p.m. and a jazz band will play.

Atchison

Today, Sunday: Commemorations of the bicentennial of the first Independence Day celebrated in the American West by the Lewis and Clark expedition near present-day Atchison. Continuing activities include a keelboat replica and encampment of crew members with the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, Mo.; four distinct encampments of re-enactors; displays of antique American flags; art exhibits including Artrain USA and Lewis and Clark paintings; 1800s-style entertainment and Lewis and Clark speakers and narrated trolley tours of Atchison.

2 p.m. today: Foot parade with re-enactors, fife and bugle corps, American Indian representatives.

8 p.m. Sunday: 35th Infantry of the Kansas National Guard will perform at Riverfront Park.

9 p.m. Sunday: “The First Fourth Grand Salute” followed by a fireworks display.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. today: Harnessing demonstrations followed by a historic wagon ride through the prairie. A blacksmith will demonstrate branding irons throughout the day.

10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. Sunday: Visitors can see a cowboy demonstrate horse-saddling skills.

2:30 p.m. Sunday: A reading of the Declaration of Independence. Immediately afterward, visitors can participate in cowboy games of roping, horseshoe pitching and even a whistling contest.

  • Throughout the weekend, costumed interpreters will demonstrate historic cooking and roping techniques. The preserve is two miles north of Strong City on Kansas Highway 177.
