Police chief resigns after official forced out

? A police chief in southwest Kansas has resigned, a week after the City Council forced the city administrator to step down.

Ulysses Police Chief Charles Gregory said his decision to resign was in part due to the Jan. 14 departure of former administrator Bill Powers.

“I felt he was the only support we had between the police department and the council members,” Gregory said.

He also cited difficulty with Ulysses City Councilman Jerry Anderson, who Gregory said has criticized the department’s attention to enforcing driving under the influence laws. Anderson said he felt Gregory was putting too much emphasis on DUI arrests.

Ulysses Mayor Ed Wiltse said Gregory resigned Monday. The council appoints the police chief each April.
